Emmitt Smith ran for 163 yards, scored four times and set two team touchdown records as the Cowboys crushed the Giants and handed them their worst home shutout loss in franchise history. Smith tied the club mark for touchdowns in a game, which he already shared with four others, including Giants coach Dan Reeves. He increased his career rushing touchdown total to 75, moving past Tony Dorsett. Smith has 78 touchdowns in 78 career games.
New York suffered its first home shutout loss since a 10-0 loss to Philadelphia on October 31st, 1976. It was the team's first shutout in a home opener since a 9-0 setback against Detroit in 1934.
