Cowboys Defiant Over Defeat

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- The Dallas Cowboys were more defiant than
down after their unpleasant trip to San Francisco.
``I guarantee you we'll beat them in January,'' safety James
Washington said of the 49ers. ``They won the battle but we'll win
the war like we always do.''
The 49ers beat the Cowboys 21-14 Sunday, breaking a three-game
losing streak against Dallas, which included two straight NFC
championship games.
``I just wish we had given it our best shot,'' Dallas coach
Barry Switzer said. ``We didn't play like we normally do.''
It was the first road loss for the Cowboys under Switzer.
The 49ers controlled the Dallas running game, limiting Emmitt
Smith to only 78 yards. Troy Aikman suffered three interceptions,
two of them when he tried to force the ball into tight coverage.
``We'll step up the next time we see them,'' safety Darren
Woodson said. ``That's when it will be money time. The 49ers won
and celebrated and I understand it being a big deal for them. We
did that when we beat them two years ago. Next time it will be
different.''
Offensive guard Nate Newton said the 49ers earned the right
``for a little trash talk. They got us this time. But this is not
our Super Bowl. This was just another game on our schedule.''
Aikman refused to blame a sore thumb on his passing problems.
``The thumb didn't bother me on the throws,'' he said. ``It's
not a good feeling to lose a game like this. But we know the payoff
comes in the playoffs.''
Defensive end Charles Haley said the 49ers hoodwinked the
Cowboys.
``They ran every trick play they had,'' Haley said. ``We'll be
ready next time for anything they do.''
Haley was victimized by bootlegs run by 49ers quarterback Steve
Young.
``I should have looked for that play,'' Haley said. ``They used
to run that play against me in practice all the time when I was
with the 49ers.''
Smith said the 49ers were effective with an eight-man front in
the second half.
``We didn't play our best,'' Smith said. ``It was like we didn't
show up in the second half. We lost. But it's still a long road to
January.''
``This wasn't the Super Bowl, thank God,'' wide receiver Michael
Irvin said. ``We have six games to go and we're still in first
place.''
``We did things we don't normally do,'' defensive lineman Chad
Hennings said. ``We don't usually have so many penalties and
turnovers. It was strange.''
