Aikman Knocked Out Of Game --- October 23, 1994
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Quarterback Troy Aikman was knocked out of
the game in the Dallas-Arizona game with a concussion he received
on the Cowboys' first possession.
Aikman also was cut on his chin and tongue when he was injured
on the eighth play of a nine-play, 67-yard drive for the touchdown
that put the Cowboys ahead 7-0 just 4:33 into the game.
He was rolling to his left beyond the protection of the pocket
when defensive tackle Michael Bankston cut off his running room at
the Cardinals' 10. Bankston and Wilber Marshall crashed into Aikman
simultaneously, with Marshall's helmet causing the damage to the
quarterback's face. Aikman managed to get rid of the ball for an
incomplete pass.
After a penalty, Aikman then threw a 15-yard TD pass to Alvin
Harper.
Aikman walked to the locker room under his own power, and Rodney
Peete replaced him. After an examination, the Cowboys decided to
keep him out of the contest.
The Cowboys lost another offensive starter late in the first
half. Left tackle Nate Newton injured his right ankle with about a
minute to play on a 1-yard run by Emmitt Smith.
Ironically, Newton was hurt on the next-to-last play of a
five-play, 48-yard drive capped by Peete's 5-yard TD to Michael
Irvin.
