Sources: League to approve Henson contract

     by Raul Villaronga
     Staff Reporter, theboys.com ®

The Dallas Morning News is reporting the NFL Management Council has notified the Cowboys that the eight-year contract signed by quarterback Drew Henson will be approved.

Henson, who is due in Dallas tomorrow, can be officially announced as a member of the Cowboys at that time and will be eligible to begin the off-season conditioning program on Monday.

Henson’s agent, Tom Condon, had been in contact with league officials due to the unique circumstances of the contract.

League rules specify that two teams involved in a trade must be able to fit the player under the cap of the existing team before the trade can be made. Due to the Houston Texans cap situation, the Cowboys crafted a contract that guaranteed Henson $3.5 million. But some of that money is in the last two years of the contract – two years after the existing collective bargaining agreement is set to expire.

The NFL Players Association met with the council today to prove that the deal did not violate the spirit of the salary cap. The council agreed.
