Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections include Cowboys

     by Raul Villaronga
     Staff Reporter, theboys.com ®

The Dallas Cowboys had four players voted to the Pro Bowl: left tackle Flozell Adams, left guard Larry Allen, safety Roy Williams and defensive tackle La'Roi Glover were named to the team.

All four will be starters.

In addition, to top it all off, Williams was selected All-Pro.

The St, Louis Rams were the only NFC team with more selections – five.

It marks the most players the Cowboys have had named to the Pro Bowl since 1999, when five players made the trip.

It is the first selection for Allen and Williams. Glover has made four consecutive appearances – two with the Saints and two with the Cowboys. Allen returns for his eighth appearance after his streak of seven consecutive Pro Bowls was snapped last season.

Allen struggled with his endurance and stamina in training camp this year. He was also hampered with an ankle injury to start the season, but started to come on strong and get his wind during the latter half of the season.

"I'm genuinely happy for him and all the rest of those guys," Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said. "When you get a day when you can kind of pay tribute to your players instead of criticizing them, correcting them, yelling at them, warning them and badgering them, which I spend most of the time doing, it's nice for a minute to say, 'I salute you.' "

Adams is the big story of the four players.

After being drafted in 1998 out of Michigan State, Adams never really stepped up to play to the level that the staff had envisioned.

Before this season, Adams was arguable the best offensive lineman in free agency. After Parcells was hired, the Cowboys decided to sign Adams to a long-term deal, inking the six-year veteran to a five-year, $24 million contract and giving him a $10 million signing bonus.

All Adams did this season was earn his money. He blossomed under Parcells and offensive line coach George Warhop, who put together a solid offensive line in Arizona before joining the Cowboys this season.

"I was really hoping Flozell had a chance," said Parcells, "because I thought he did a real good job this year."

"I wasn't expecting it. I was kind of surprised when I heard my name," Adams said. "I was surprised and shocked at the same time. After six years in the league, it feels good to go."

Glover led the team with 18 quarterback pressures and had 47 tackles. He had another solid season working in the interior of the top-ranked defense in the NFL this season.

"He's a solid guy," Parcells said of Glover. "One of the great things I have here with the Cowboys is that I've got about 10 or 12 guys that I just don't ever worry about, and he's one of them."

Williams has already earned a reputation as one of the NFL's hardest hitters in just his second year. He has been compared to San Francisco great Ronnie Lott.

"I don't know why you would want to get hit by Roy, unless you are a glutton for punishment," Parcells said of Williams earlier this season.

Williams ended the season with 77 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 interceptions.

"I'm happy and proud," Williams said. "My teammates deserve a lot of credit for this."

The Associated Press All-Pro team is selected in a nationwide balloting of 50 sports writers and broadcasters.
