Cowboys cut seven players

The Dallas Cowboys released seven players Sunday afternoon – two of which were draft choices.

This year’s sixth-round draft cornerback B.J. Tucker, and seventh-round guard Justin Bates were among those released. Tucker has been plagued with a sore hamstring for most of camp and was not seeing a lot of action. Bates never made a good impression in training camp.

When asked whether it bothered him to cut draft choices, head coach Bill Parcells replied that it did not.

“Here's the way I look at this,” said Parcells. “No matter who you draft, if you waive them and a free agent that you signed after the draft winds up being good enough, to me that's a wash.”

Louis Mackey, who led the special teams last year with 18 tackles, was also released. Rookie linebackers Bradie James, this year’s fourth-round pick, and free agent Keith O'Neil were pressing him for playing time. Mackey, being a third year veteran, would also count more against the cap than the rookies.

Punter Filip Filipovic was also let go. Filipovic took over midway through the 2002 season for the Cowboys after Micah Knorr was injured. The Cowboys resigned veteran Toby Gowin this offseason, so this move came with little surprise.

Also cut were rookie fullback Jason McKie, rookie wide receiver Gary Lusk and rookie safety Jonathan Martin.
