Cowboys pick up CB Mitchell

The Cowboys continued to fill spots on the roster by signing free-agent cornerback Donald Mitchell on Thursday.

Mitchell, who spent his four-year career with the Tennessee Titans, signed a three-year contract worth about $2.6 million, including a $675,000 bonus.

Mostly a nickel back, Mitchell started nine games last season due to injuries to Andre Dyson and Samari Rolle.

A Beaumont, TX, native, Mitchell made it known that he would like to play for Dallas.

"This is the team that I grew up watching as a kid," Mitchell said. "If you're from this area, you dreamed about playing for the Cowboys, and now it is a reality for me. I'm excited about coming home and about the opportunity I will get here."

He also said that he was excited to play for new head coach Bill Parcells.

"He's a proven winner," said Mitchell, "and he's going to get this thing turned around."

Mitchell was drafted out of nearby SMU in 1999 by the Titans and had a solid rookie season. But he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the following training camp and missed the entire 2000 season.

He will now compete against Derek Ross and Pete Hunter, both of which were rookies last year. Mario Edwards is a restricted free agent who started at one of the cornerback positions last season.

The Cowboys could also address the cornerback position on the draft, with Kansas State standout Terence Newman still an option when they pick at the fifth overall position in next month’s NFL Draft.
