Goodrich, two others released

The Dallas Cowboys released backup cornerback Dwayne Goodrich and two other players on Thursday.

Fullback Robert Thomas and offensive guard Jeremy McKinney were the other players released on the first day NFL teams could officially waive players.

Goodrich has been charged with two counts of manslaughter and three counts of failure to stop and render assistance stemming from a deadly hit-and-run accident that occurred on January 14. The accident left two men dead and another injured.

The recovering man has filed a $37 million lawsuit seeking damages against the Cowboys’ 2000 draft pick.

Both Goodrich and Thomas were in the final year of their contracts. Their release will save the Cowboys $1.25 million, according to the team Web site.

Goodrich never really lived up to expectations. He injured his hamstring during training camp in his rookie season, then ruptured his Achilles tendon in training camp the following year.

Upon returning his speed was never up to par and he was beaten easily by opposing receivers.

Thomas, a 6-1, 273-pound fullback, was in his fifth year with Dallas. After the retirement of Daryl Johnston, Thomas was given the opportunity to remain on the team by converting from a linebacker.

He missed most of the 2001 season after left ankle surgery.

Thomas regained his starting position in 2002 because rookie fullback Jamar Martin tore his right knee ligament during training camp. Martin is expected to be the starter this year.

McKinney, 6-6, 301-pounds, was signed with the Cowboys shortly after being released by the Houston Texans. The Cowboys were hurting for linemen during that time because of several injuries during training camp and the start of the season.

In November, he underwent heart surgery after having chest pains following a road game in Detroit.
