Former Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton has been indicted by a grand jury on federal drug-trafficking charges that he conspired to possess and distribute marijuana.
Three other persons were named with Newton in the indictment.
Newton has been held without bail since last month at a detention center in Seagoville, TX. His bail was denied because he had been out on bail from similar charges in Louisiana a few weeks earlier.
Louisiana state police pulled over Newton in a van following another vehicle. They found 213 pounds of marijuana and about $18,000 in cash. All men were arrested and Newton was released on $100,000 bail.
On December 12, Newton, 40, and passenger, Bruce Freeman-Canady, 30, of Jacksonville, FL, were driving in Newton’s red Ford F-150 pickup with a rented white Chevrolet Monte Carlo traveling from Garland to Houston. Drug Enforcement Administration agents were acting on a tip that the vehicles were transporting marijuana.
When officers stopped the vehicles about 25 miles south of Dallas, they found $10,000 cash in Newton’s truck and 175 pounds of marijuana in two duffel bags and a suitcase in the trunk of the Monte Carlo, driven by Charles Deaundra Howard, 25, of Garland.
There were traces of marijuana found in a Carolina Panthers gym bag in Newton’s pickup, but not enough to warrant additional charges.
Newton went to the Pro Bowl six times as an offensive lineman with the Cowboys. He was a member of the team that won three Super Bowls in the 1990s. He spent 14 seasons in the NFL, 13 with Dallas. He retired last year after a season with the Carolina Panthers.
